Deb
Hi, I’m Deb, I have put this program together to let you know that my life was not always great; you see I am an alcoholic. I got sober on the 10th of June 1995 and I believe that I can help others by telling you the truth about my life with and now without booze and drugs. Of course this is not my real name, I use "Deb" for my anonymity and you can to.

Sue
Hi, my name is Sue and although I am not an Alcoholic, I have been affected by some-one elses drinking. I was bought up in a home where my dad drank too much & my mum reacted to his drinking by yelling, changing the rules & not being a very patient, happy person!!

Sue Continued
Although my dad wasn’t violent, my mum was and I hated her! My mum left when I was 14 yo & I had 4 younger brothers & sisters. My mum only took the youngest child with her. We went to boarding school & had severe rules there & no rules at home & I became a rather wild child, who knew everything, had to have the last word on everything, was unteachable, blamed the whole world & everyone in it for my misfortune & was angry.
My dad got sober when I was 18yo & I got pregnant when I was 18yo as well. My dad suggested I go to Al-Anon – to help my self-esteem!!!! I was angry & confused, cause it wasn’t my problem & I didn’t think I had any problem with my self-esteem – I THOUGH I WAS GOD- just had a hard time convincing others to come around to my thinking!!! I didn’t relate to the members of Al-Anon at the time, as they were all wives of Alcoholics & I hadn’t had that experience yet. BUT, when they spoke of what they did & how they felt, I heard my mum & over time I realized she acted the way she did because she was the wife of an alcoholic & NOT to make my life miserable!!!! I learnt not to hate her any more!!!!
Over time we started an Alateen (groups for teenagers affected by someone elses drinking – mum, dad, sister, brother, grandparents – anyone!!) meeting in the town I lived in. I learnt I have many problems of my own that were actually created by my doing. I learnt new ways to communicate, I have choices in life, I am in charge of my life, how to laugh & so, so much more that has assisted me in becoming a happier calmer person.
I did Al-Anon at the same time & still am a grateful member of Al-Anon I spent many years being an Alateen sponsor & love watching the kids develop into themselves. The programs helped show me a way to focus on me and let others get on with living their own lives – how they want. Today I live life – not survive and Al-Anon/Alateen has taught me to live life on lifes’ terms!!! There is so much more to my story, but to get it, you will need to tune into 3WBC 94.1FM Wednesdays between 10am-12pm……….
I know it can work – if you work it!!! Al-Anon has freed me from ‘the shackles of self’ – I hope it can help some-one out there as well!!! THERE IS HOPE!
